Statement on the UK Race Riots

As a charity that promotes international friendship and belonging, we have been saddened to witness the violent riots across the UK in recent days. The people involved in these actions do not represent the wider views of the United Kingdom, where the values of a fair, just and inclusive society are championed. At International Students House, we reject and condemn this recent wave of violence and aggression against perceived minorities in our community. We believe everyone has the right to study, work and live in peace and security.

Please take sensible precautions when you are out and about in London, avoiding any areas where large gatherings might take place. If you are worried about the situation, please reach out to friends and family. If you are an ISH resident, the Duty Managers are here for your safety 24/7. You can also approach your university advice teams and student unions. This article by Student Space about the impact of global events is equally applicable to the UK situation.

In case of any threat or suspicious activity, please report to the police, by dialling 101 or using the online reporting tool, and dial 999 in an emergency. Use platforms like Tell MAMA tellmamauk.org, MEND mend.org.uk, and The Islamophobia Response Unit theiru.org.uk to report any incidents.

Please look out for one another and stay safe.
