We are delighted to have received the Gold Award from Greengage ECOsmart Hotels and Venue accreditation in 2024! Working to become more environmentally sustainable is key to our commitment to responsible and ethical business practices at ISH. Caring for our planet also ties directly to our goal of creating a better, safer, more equal and inclusive future for future generations. You can read our sustainability policy here.
We have installed LED lights, motion detector lighting in corridors and new, double-glazed windows to save energy. We are reducing paper consumption by digitalising more processes, cutting travel emissions through hybrid meetings, having clear recycling facilities, and being committed to reducing single-use plastic.
Our catering provider, BaxterStorey, focuses on seasonal, locally sourced food and follows the Ethical Trading Initiative Base Code for suppliers. We have also included tips on how students can help us reduce emissions, pollution, and waste in the residents’ handbook.
Remember, it all adds up
Tips that will help with our energy efficiency
- Switch off during breaks, lunch and at the end of the day.
- Turn lights off in unoccupied rooms.
- Don’t overfill kettles, boil what you need or offer to make a colleague a cuppa.
- Think before you print.
- Turn down the AC –turning down the temperature by as little as one degree Celsius could reduce our annual bill by up to 8%.
- Retain the heating between 20 and 23 degrees Celsius.
- Unplug unused electrical items, if they are still plugged in, they are still using up energy.
